Safety Policy and Conditions
LocalSchools is the easy way to create and maintain a social network of friends, alumni, and colleges. Please keep in mind that what you post may expose you to danger. To better protect you from those that may wish you harm, here are some guidelines when using LocalSchools:
- Remember to always use your screen name. While chatting or posting to other members, don't reveal your first or last name or your telephone number. Except for the basic information contained on your profile, your personal information is never displayed and LocalSchools only distributes it to colleges and universities you wish to apply to. Be careful of posting sensitive, personal information that relates to your physical description or sexual information. You may still post your interests, hobbies, academic interests, and college goals, but avoid posting anything that would make it easy for a stranger to find you, such as where you hang out every day after school.
- Be extremely cautious about meeting friends in person. It's fun to talk to people who have cool personalities and interests similar to yours, but avoid meeting people in person whom you do not fully know. If you do choose to must meet someone, do it in a public place and bring a friend or trusted adult. Colleges themselves may invite you to visit them to see the campus, review transcripts, applications, and other matters to consider accepting you. The same rule of common sense applies. Bring a friend or trusted adult and meet them at an offical school location (e.g. the admissions building). In addition, we recommend calling the college switchboard operator to confirm your appointment date and time with the admissions individual whom you are to meet with. If when talking to the college switchboard to confirm such a meeting and the individual you're supposed to meet with is not at the physical location of the school, alert a trusted adult, the authorities, and us here at LocalSchools.
- Sexual Harassment, threats of violence, and inappropriate content should always be reported to us. If you feel someone's behavior is inappropriate, contact us immediately. Talk with a trusted adult, or report it to the authorities if you have revealed your name or phone number and you feel threatened.
- Don't post anything that may affect your chance of getting into a college of your choice. Before posting a photo or personal interests, post something tasteful that a college or your parents wouldn't find shocking. Pornographic or obscene posting will result in immediate termination of your account.
- If you are under 18, do not discuss your age at any time. LocalSchools does not allow membership under age 14. Any dishonesty about your age will result in immediate termination of your account and would only destroy your opportunity to be considered at a college of choice. If you are over 18 and are a sexual predator, we are watching you. You will be immediately reported to local or federal law enforcement for prosecution.
- Be careful of phishing scams. Phishing is a method used by scammers to obtain your personal information (such as your username and password, real name, or telephone number) by pretending to be a person or site you trust.
